Dr. Wissam Kiwan, a renowned gastroenterologist and advanced endoscopist, has built a distinguished career marked by academic excellence, professional distinction, and a passion for education. Born in Daraa, Syria, Dr. Kiwan’s journey has been a testament to his dedication and perseverance.
Dr. Kiwan’s educational pursuits began at Damascus University, where he earned his medical degree in 2014. He then pursued advanced training in the United States, completing his residency in Internal Medicine at Wayne State University – Detroit Medical Center from 2015 to 2018. Further specializing in Gastroenterology, he completed a fellowship at the same institution from 2018 to 2021. Additionally, he undertook an advanced endoscopy fellowship at the University of Southern California from 2021 to 2022.
Currently, Dr. Kiwan serves as Assistant Professor of Medicine at Saint Louis University Hospital, where he also directs the advanced endoscopy fellowship program. His expertise extends to his role as a skilled table tennis and pickleball player.
Dr. Kiwan’s involvement with SAMS (Syrian American Medical Society) has been a significant aspect of his career. From 2015 to 2022, he was an active member of the SAMS Education Committee, playing a vital role in organizing and leading various educational initiatives. These endeavors aimed to enhance residency application and preparedness, including Residency Preparedness Conferences, webinars, and workshops focused on interview skills and USMLE Step 2 CS preparation.
Through his contributions to SAMS, Dr. Kiwan has demonstrated his commitment to giving back to the medical community, sharing his expertise, and supporting the professional growth of fellow healthcare professionals. His dedication to education and mentorship serves as an inspiration to many, reflecting his passion for advancing the field of medicine.
