Dr. Yassar Kanawati

Dr. Yassar Kanawati is a psychiatrist specializing in child, adolescent, adult, and addiction psychiatry. Originally from Damascus, Syria, Dr. Kanawati earned her medical degree from the Medical University of Damascus. Following her passion for psychiatry, she began a residency at Pierre et Marrie Curie University in Paris, France, before furthering her training in the United States. She completed her residency in General Psychiatry and fellowship in Children and Adolescent Psychiatry at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan.
 
Recognized for her outstanding contributions to the field, Dr. Kanawati holds the prestigious title of Distinguished Fellow at the American Psychiatry Association. Currently, she serves as the CEO of Peachtree Family Psychiatry Clinic in Atlanta, GA, offering comprehensive psychiatric evaluations, treatments, and psychotherapeutic modalities to patients of all ages. Additionally, she holds positions as an Adjunct Assistant Professor at Emory University and Morehouse School of Medicine.
 
Beyond her professional achievements, Dr. Kanawati is devoted to her family. She enjoys the company of her spouse and three adult children. She finds solace in travel, literature, and continuous learning endeavors in her leisure time.

Since 2011, she has been an active member of the Syrian American Medical Society (SAMS), pivotal in initiating the SAMS Psychosocial Program in Jordan/Amman in 2012. Her dedication extends to involvement in similar programs in Jordan, Turkey, Lebanon, and Syria. She has delivered numerous presentations at SAMS International and National Conferences, focusing on the effects of trauma/war on families and the treatment of trauma effects.
 
Moreover, Dr. Kanawati has shared her expertise with the Georgia Psychiatric Physician Association, delivering presentations on the treatment of Syrian refugees in Jordan and Turkey. Her contributions also include publishing the article “Saving the Lost Generation” in the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry News.
Dr. Kanawati remains actively engaged in SAMS Psychosocial Programs and education.
