From a detention cell to the cardiac cell, Dr. Majd Jazaerly’s journey is one defined by resilience, purpose, and an unwavering commitment to service. Born and raised in Damascus, Syria, his path in medicine began at home but soon became a story that crossed borders—shaped by hardship, perseverance, and hope.
A Journey Forged by Determination
Dr. Jazaerly started medical school in Syria, where his early aspirations were abruptly interrupted after being detained for participating in the uprising. Rather than allowing this experience to halt his dreams, he transformed it into a source of motivation and strength.
He transferred to Xavier University, where he completed his medical education and graduated in 2017. Following graduation, Dr. Jazaerly spent one year as a Research Fellow at Harvard Medical School, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, gaining valuable academic and research experience before beginning his specialty training.
Throughout his postgraduate medical journey, Dr. Jazaerly consistently emerged as a leader. He served as Chief Resident during his Internal Medicine residency and later as Chief Fellow during his Cardiology fellowship. Today, he is completing a fellowship in Clinical Cardiac Electrophysiology at the University of Rochester in New York, where he continues to excel—once again serving as Chief Fellow.
As Dr. Majd often reflects, from a detention cell to a cardiac cell, his journey stands as a powerful testament to perseverance, determination, and hope.
Beyond the White Coat
Outside of medicine, Dr. Jazaerly is a devoted family man. He is married to Dr. Rama Kanout, and together they are raising two young children—Reemy, aged 3.5 years, and Faris, just 1.5 months old. Family remains at the heart of his life, providing balance and grounding amid the demands of a rigorous medical career.
A lifelong sports enthusiast, Dr. Majd played basketball professionally in Syria and continues to enjoy watching and playing soccer. Sports, much like medicine, have shaped his sense of discipline, teamwork, and leadership.
A Decade of Service with SAMS
Dr. Jazaerly’s relationship with SAMS began in 2013—on his very first day after arriving in the United States—when he volunteered at a SAMS warehouse in Michigan. Since then, his involvement has grown steadily and meaningfully. Over the years, he has served as:
- A member of the Educational Committee, leading and contributing to numerous educational initiatives
- A member of the South Region Syrian Regional Group (SRG)
- A leader of multiple fundraising initiatives supporting SAMS projects
- An Advisory Committee member for Al-Afiah Hospital
Reflecting on his experience, Dr. Majd shares:
“SAMS has become more than an organization—it has become my family. Through SAMS meetings and activities, I’ve met incredible people who feel like brothers and sisters to me.”
Giving Back with Purpose
What inspired Dr. Jazaerly to become a SAMS member is deeply personal. His goal has always been to give back to the Syrian healthcare system. Through SAMS, he continues to contribute to rebuilding and advancing healthcare in Syria—particularly by supporting the development of advanced cardiac electrophysiology services, an area where he brings both expertise and vision.
Dr. Majd Jazaerly’s story embodies the spirit of SAMS: resilience in the face of adversity, excellence in service, and a profound commitment to community. His journey reminds us that even the most difficult chapters can become the foundation for meaningful impact—and that through dedication and compassion, one individual can help shape the future of healthcare for generations to come.
