We are delighted to announce our scholarship applications are now open!
As a medical school graduate, pursuing residency training in the United States is a new and exciting challenge. SAMS seeks to support inspiring medical students. SAMS is the only medical and professional society that has represented physicians of Syrian descent since its founding in 1998. As a medical school graduate, pursuing residency training in the US is a new and exciting challenge. SAMS seeks to support you as you achieve your dreams.
The cost has been one of the many obstacles for Syrian applicants because of the traveling expenses and match expenses accrued during the interviewing process. To help meet this need for our community, SAMS launched its scholarship program 10 years ago. This program has grown immensely over the last few years to support more and more Syrians as they begin their residency. More than 220 Syrian medical graduates have received loans through the scholarship program, of whom the vast majority have matched and are current residents or practicing doctors in the US or other countries.
Through this program, SAMS offers monetary loans of $1,500-$4,000 to selected applicants. Awardees are expected to repay their interest-free loans, upon matching in residency, over two years. If an awardee does not match in a residency program his/her loan will be forgiven unless he/she matches at a later date.
To be eligible for this interest-free loan, you must be a Syrian medical school graduate or a Syrian national who graduated from a foreign medical school and must be applying for the ERAS match this year.
