SAMS hosted its 9th Annual National Conference in Orlando, Florida on February 14- 16, 2020. The conference brought together medical professionals, humanitarians, thought leaders, educators, and medical students to discuss this year’s theme of “Incorporating Innovation in Medical Practice in the U.S. and Globally.”
It was an honor to welcome Dr. Amani Ballour, the brave subject of the Oscar-nominated documentary The Cave, as well as the producer of the film Kirstine Barfod to the conference. Dr. Amani was one of the very few courageous doctors who braved bombardment and siege in East Ghouta to care for the sick and injured. SAMS is honored to have worked with her, and her dedication has inspired us all to continue our work despite the unimaginable challenges we continue to face today.
During the gala dinner, we were so inspired by 11-year-old Nour, who suffered severe burn injuries from a fire in her home in Syria ast year, which sadly took the life of her mother. SAMS was able to arrange for her to be treated at Bambino Gesu in Rome & then the Shriners Hospital in Boston. Nour is determined to do good in the world after receiving a second chance at life. She wants to become a pediatrician when she grows up to help children like her. Tonight, she donated her allowance to SAMS to support children in need.
